QUINCY, Mass. — Peapod by Stop & Shop, a division of Ahold USA here, is on a summer vacation.

The Stop & Shop website promotes the fact that Peapod delivers to numerous Northeast vacation spots, from as far south as the Jersey Shore and the Hamptons to as far north as Cape Cod and even Kennebunkport, Maine.

“Peapod enables people to spend more time on the beach by eliminating the big stock-up trip at the beginning of the vacation week,” Peg Merzbacher, Peapod's marketing director, told SN.

While business for the Skokie, Ill.-based online grocer is traditionally strong in vacation areas each summer, it has trended upward over the past few years, according to Merzbacher.

Much of the volume is from customers who are year-round residents of beach areas, but vacationers are also making an impression.

“We have seen business from customers who use us in their year-round homes, and are delighted to be able to use us on vacation,” she said.

To better serve vacation areas, Peapod has opened new fulfillment facilities, including one in Tom's River, N.J., which opened last September and serves dozens of communities on the Jersey Shore, including Freehold, Neptune, Jackson and Asbury Park. Another new facility, which opened in October in Riverhead, N.Y., allows more deliveries on Long Island, including Shelter Island, accessible only by ferry, and the far eastern shore of Montauk.
