Wegmans Hosts Local Tomato Harvest Celebration

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets [3] will wrap up its Taste the Flavors of Summer series with a Local Tomato Harvest celebration at its stores this weekend.

At each of Wegmans’ 80 locations, clusters of red balloons overhead will designate tasting stations at which customers can sample a large variety of items made in-store with fresh, locally grown tomatoes. At some stores, local grower-suppliers will participate.

The purpose of the harvest celebration is to enable customers to taste the local tomatoes at their peak of flavor and to give them ideas about how to use them easily at home to create tempting meals or meal accompaniments.

Encouraging people to eat more fresh vegetables and fruit has been a priority of nutritionists everywhere.

“Our ‘Half-Plate Healthy’ guideline can help people balance foods to feel their best,” said Jane Andrews, Wegmans’ nutrition and product labeling manager, in a news release. “Filling half your plate with vegetables and fruits makes it easier to stay at a healthy weight, have better blood pressure readings and reduce the risk of certain health problems.”

Early evening on Friday, Aug. 10, and all afternoon on Saturday, Aug. 11, customers can taste such creations as caprese salad and heirloom tomato salad in the produce aisle, and tomato bruschetta topping on a ciabatta baguette in the in-store bakery. In the prepared foods department, customers will be tasting peppadew, tomato and hummus naan pizza, roasted tomato basil soup and a European baguette with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, sliced plum tomatoes and lettuce with a pesto mayonnaise. The meat department will participate with a tasting station that will offer a BLT sandwich with beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes and Wegmans’ own applewood-smoked bacon.

The Local Tomato Harvest is the third event Wegmans stores have hosted this year to encourage customers to taste vegetables at their peak-of-the-season flavors and learn new ways of enjoying them with easy, healthy recipes. The stores held a Grilling Harvest event in June and a Local Corn Harvest event in July.
