United Supermarkets: Trade Up to Store Brands

LUBBOCK, Texas — United Supermarkets [2] has leveraged the NuVal nutrition scoring system to encourage shoppers to switch to its store brands.

Every Tuesday is dubbed “Trade Up Tuesday,” when it compares the NuVal scores of a national brand to its private labels.

Today, it compared Green Giant Broccoli and Zesty Cheese, which has a NuVal score of 25, to Food Club Chopped Broccoli, with a NuVal score of 100. “It's Tuesday, and that means it's time to Trade Up,” the retailer writes on the website livingwellmarketstreet.com [3]. “This week, grab your mittens because we are opening the freezer doors and exposing the truth.”

Last week, it compared Yoplait Trix Yogurt, with a NuVal score of 32, to Food Club Light Vanilla Yogurt, NuVal 99. NuVal scores are calculated based upon beneficial nutrients per calories in a single serving. The higher the score, the better. Higher scores identify products with less sugar, less salt and fewer unfavorable oils; they contain more fiber from whole grains as well as vitamins and minerals from fruits and nuts.
