Report Evaluates Tesco’s Track Record

A report scheduled for release Thursday will indicate that Tesco’s entry into the U.S. market has the potential to significantly influence the direction of the nation’s grocery business in such areas as labor, environment and health.

LOS ANGELES — A report scheduled for release Thursday will indicate that Tesco’s entry into the U.S. market has the potential to significantly influence the direction of the nation’s grocery business in such areas as labor, environment and health. The report, complied by the Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College here, says Tesco “has been especially adept at marketing itself as a socially responsible corporation.” However, Robert Gottlieb, professor of urban and environmental policy, said yesterday the study also indicates that Tesco’s track record “has significant gaps between what it has promised and how it has achieved its current position as one of the top multinational operations,” noting that the report identifies ways for Tesco to reduce or eliminate those gaps.
