Loblaw First to Offer ASC-Certified Seafood

BRAMPTON, Ontario — Loblaw Cos. [3] announced it will be the first retailer in North America to carry seafood certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council with the addition of PC Blue Menu tilapia.

The ASC is an independent non-profit that certifies farmed fish for sustainability, in the same way the Marine Stewardship Council does for wild-caught fish.

"We saw the need for the creation of a global standard-setting program for farmed seafood and are proud to have been engaged in helping launch the first ASC-certified product in stores. We hope that Canadians will agree that we are driving the fish farming industry forward to more responsible methods," Paul Uys, vice president, sustainable seafood, said in a statement.

PC Blue Menu tilapia will be sold at select Loblaw banner stores throughout Canada. The retailer plans to add other ASC-certified products like basa/pangasius fish and tropical shrimp later in 2013.

Loblaw plans to source all of its seafood from sustainable sources by the end of this year.
