MADISON, Wis. - Woodman’s Food Markets, Janesville, Wis., has launched a mobile scanning application developed by NCR at its Gammon Road location here.
With the Mobile Shopper app, Woodman’s shoppers can use their iPhones to create shopping lists before going to the store and to scan items in the aisles as they shop.
To check out, shoppers go to self-checkout stations and scan a QR code with their phones to transfer their mobile shopping information to the POS system. The self-checkout station confirms the weight of the items scanned with the phone against that of the items being bagged. Attendants can help customers reconcile any discrepancies the system identifies and answer any other questions. Produce, other non-barcoded items and impulse items can also be added at the self checkout.
Shoppers then pay with their preferred method of payment. The store features free Wi-Fi so shoppers do not have to use their own data plan while using the Mobile Shopper app.
Woodman’s, which began publicizing the new shopping feature to store shoppers with in-store signage in early December, went live with the app on Jan. 7. The signs explain how mobile scanning works and provide shoppers a QR code to direct them to Apple’s App Store to download the free Woodman’s-branded app.
“We’re excited about launching this Mobile Shopper solution with NCR and look forward to delighting our customers with this new, high-tech shopping and check-out option,” said Chad Greenwald of Woodman’s, in a statement.
Following deployment at the Madison location, Woodman’s will explore deploying Mobile Shopper at its other 11 stores in Wisconsin and three stores in Illinois.
NCR’s plans for the app include integrating it to a store’s loyalty system, enabling retailers to target promotions to items on a customer’s shopping list, Jimmy Frangis, NCR’s vice president and general manager, told SN Monday at the National Retail Federation’s annual conference in New York. The app will also allow shoppers to pay for purchases on their phone using a PayPal account, The loyalty and payment features are not yet live in stores.
