Wal-Mart to Donate Funds to Empower Women

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores [3] here said it is teaming up with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on an initiative to empower up to 55,000 women in Latin America and the Caribbean to build businesses and take control of their futures.

Speaking at the Sixth Summit of the America in Cartagena, Colombia, the company said its Walmart Foundation has pledged $1.5 million to Clinton's International Fund for Women and Girls to help create grants to support potential female entrepreneurs living in rural and indigenous communities throughout the Americas.

The company also said the Foundation will donate $500,000 to Vital Voices, an organization committed to unleashing the leadership potential of women around the world by providing long-term support for women trying to grow small businesses. In addition, the company said it intends to work with the Inter-American Development Bank to provide job training and help with job placement for nearly 1 million young people in Latin America and the Caribbean, at least half of whom are women.
