Supermarkets celebrate citrus with new varieties, a longer season and enticing branded products

The slow evolution of citrus in the produce department — and some recent changes — have brought new opportunities for retailers, sources told SN.

Over the years, the citrus department has expanded greatly, said Brian Gibbons, produce and floral director at Farmington, Conn.-based Highland Park Market. It used to be stores only sold navel oranges and clementines.
