SHANGHAI, China — Budweiser & Clamato Chelada, a savory beer that combines a popular tomato juice cocktail with Budweiser, was selected as one of nine winners in the SIAL d'Or competition for new and innovative products here last month.

The product, which won the prize in the alcoholic beverage category, was introduced in April 2007 and has been rolled out to select markets during the past year. The other winners, which will compete with Chelada for the Global SIAL d'Or grand prize, were:

  • Chilled Dairy Products: Braukäse (Austria), a specially aged cheese that is soaked in beer.

  • Chilled Non-Dairy Products: Cully & Sully Soups (Ireland), a premium product with packaging designed so that consumers can eat directly from the container.

  • Non-Alcoholic Beverages: Coca-Cola Light Plus Vitamines (Belgium), a specially formulated beverage with a fruity taste and added vitamins and minerals.

  • Savory Frozen Products: Mochov Potence Mix, Baby Mix (Czech Republic), two fortified frozen vegetable products specially formulated for men and infants, respectively.

  • Savory Grocery Products: Discover Cuisine Pre-Cooked Exotic Meals (Canada), prepared meals using packaging that separates the sauce and protein from the starch and vegetable.

  • Sweet Frozen Products: Amul Prolife Ice Cream (India), a sugar-free, probiotic dessert.

  • Sweet Grocery Products: Chocomel Hot (Netherlands), a hot chocolate milk drink for the Senseo coffee machine.

  • Wine: Terroir Catalan (France), a range of four wines with a cap that allows for better storage.

The winner will be unveiled at the SIAL trade show in Paris in October.

In addition, Kraft's Oscar Mayer Deli Creation Sandwich Melts was named the winner of the U.S. SIAL d'Or because it received the most votes of any of the U.S. products that were nominated. It will not compete for the Global SIAL d'Or.

The products were selected by a jury of trade magazine editors from 29 different countries. SN was a member of the jury.
