Costco Debuts Australia Club

Costco Wholesale Corp. today opened its first retail outlet in Australia, a 130,000-square-foot membership club in the Docklands area of this coastal city.

MELBOURNE, Australia — Costco Wholesale Corp. today opened its first retail outlet in Australia, a 130,000-square-foot membership club in the Docklands area of this coastal city.

The store is reportedly similar to its counterparts in the U.S. and other countries, with a grocery and prepared-food offering in addition to electronics, clothing and other general merchandise.

Membership costs $60 Australian (about $50 U.S.) per year for individuals and $55 Australian for businesses. The store carries 3,600 items and employs 230, according to local reports.

The opening expands the company’s base of operations into eight different countries: Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the U.S. It also operates in Puerto Rico.
