Independents in Line for Farmer Jack Locations

DETROIT — Hollywood Super Market, Hiller’s Markets and Oakridge Markets are among the independent supermarket operators in the Detroit area who are seeking to acquire Farmer Jack stores, sources in the area told SN last week. As previously reported, Kroger is expected to acquire 20-25 of the 66 Farmer Jacks that are for sale. One local source told SN last week that buyers have not yet been found for 19 of the 66 locations. Farmer Jack’s parent company, Montvale, N.J.-based A&P, has begun liquidation sales at 41 of the stores and is expected to either close or sell all 66 stores by July 7. "We are in the advanced stages of negotiations with several purchasers for the majority of the stores," Rick DeSanta, a spokesman for A&P, told SN. "For that reason, management views July 7 to be a reasonable though approximate target date by which all stores will be either sold or closed. Sale efforts will continue regarding any stores that are closed and unsold at that time."
