BRISTOL, Va. — K-VA-T Food Stores broke ground here last week on what it said will be its largest supermarket, a 66,000-square-foot replacement store that will include a second-story demonstration kitchen and 100-seat community room.

The store is expected to open in the spring of 2012.

The store's other features will include an 84-seat cafe, a hot food bar, a floral boutique, full-service meat and seafood departments, a pharmacy with a drive-through and a Food City Gas N' Go location with five gas pumps.

Among the energy-saving features planned for the store are energy-efficient glass cooler doors, parking lot lights and refrigeration systems, the use of motion sensors, LED lighting and a skylight system that automatically dims the lights based upon the level of natural lighting. The interior decor package will also feature new eco-friendly polished concrete floors that require no waxing.

Abingdon, Va.-based K-VA-T operates 106 supermarkets in Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee.
