Mi Pueblo Faces Opposition to E-Verify Use

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The United Food and Commercial Workers Union here said pro-labor and immigrant-rights organizations plan to boycott Mi Pueblo Foods here after the Hispanic-oriented chain said it is implementing the E-Verify program to confirm the eligibility of future employees.

Vince Alvarado, Mi Pueblo’s chief operating officer, said, "After much internal debate and after evaluating our company's future growth opportunities, we felt this to be a necessary step for our company."

E-Verify is an Internet-based program that compares information from an employee's I-9 eligibility verification form with records from the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.

In a letter to community members, Mi Pueblo said it began using E-Verify for all new hires at the recommendation of the Department of Homeland Security. "It is a change that weighs heavily on the management of the company as we recognize the community concerns this program raises," the letter explained. "Our immigration system is broken, and as a society we should work together to support the very people who make this country great."

The company also said the E-Verify program "will in no way impact current employees."
