GERMANTOWN, Tenn. — Services were held here this month for John Arthur Kugele, a longtime Piggly Wiggly executive who died June 30 after a long illness. He was 63. Kugele began his supermarket industry career in 1968 at Stop & Shop as an assistant manager, and also worked for First National, Supervalu, Food Fair and Retail Systems in various management and real estate posts before joining Piggly Wiggly, then based in Memphis, Tenn., in 1980 as vice president of operations. He became a senior vice president in 1996 and held the title of senior vice president, research and franchise administration, when he retired in 2002. He is survived by his wife, Lynn Phillips Kugele, a son and two brothers.
