Price Cutter Buys Summer Fresh Chain

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — RPCS Inc. here said that it has completed the acquisition of Summer Fresh Supermarkets, also based here.

Summer Fresh operates eight stores under the Summer Fresh banner and two Save-A-Lot stores in Missouri. Employee-owned RPCS operates 48 stores under several banners including Rameys, Price Cutter, Smitty’s and Food Pyramid. Financial terms were not disclosed.

“The days leading up to Thanksgiving are some of the busiest for supermarkets and it was imperative the transition in ownership be seamless for both Summer Fresh shoppers and associates. I’m pleased to report this has been the case and thank all involved for their support,” Erick Taylor, president and chief executive officer of RPCS, said in a statement.

Taylor said the combination would support lower prices as a result of greater buying leverage. Both RPCS and Summer Fresh are customers of Associated Wholesale Grocers and carry the same private brand products.

“The acquisition of the Summer Fresh stores is truly a win-win for everyone. Shoppers will continue to engage with the same friendly and helpful Summer Fresh associates, many of whom they’ve likely known for years. They will enjoy more diverse products and services, such as freshly prepared meals, ideal for today’s busy lifestyles. And our enhanced buying power should result in greater savings at checkout,” Taylor said.
