MILWAUKEE -- Roundy‘s Supermarkets here said its distribution center in Oconomowoc, Wis., has been accepted into the state‘s “Green Tier” program for its environmentally friendly initiatives. Among them: lighting timers and use of natural lighting to reduce electricity consumption; landscaping that includes berms, trees and grasses to provide habitat for wildlife and screen the facility; fuel storage and distribution that exceeds federal requirements in case of accidental spills; recycling initiatives for cardboard, plastics and pallets; and emissions reduction technology on its truck fleet. The 1.1 million-square-foot facility opened early this year. As a Green Tier participant, the company can use the Green Tier logo in its marketing and other benefits in working with the state‘s Department of Natural Resources.
