Sprouts Plans More Expansion

PHOENIX – Sprouts Farmers Market, is continuing its rapid expansion, and meanwhile, is ringing up enviable sales.

The now-54-unit, natural foods supermarket, opened 12 stores in 2010 — the most recent one last month in Lone Tree, Colo. — and has seven openings scheduled for 2011.

Officials said that as the economy got gloomier, they decided to double down on their original mission: to offer the freshest, top quality, natural foods at a value price and to pay close attention to customers.

“We got through hard times by putting a tighter focus on our original, basic mission, and communicating that [resolve] to everybody in the company,” Doug Sanders, the chain’s president and chief operating officer, told SN.

He noted that for this year, the company’s comp sales, as well as its total sales, “are well in advance of 2009.”

The produce-centric chain, over the past few years, has added and expanded other perishables departments, including an increasingly popular prepared foods program.
