Tops Posts 1% Comp-Sales Gain in Q3

Tops Markets said comparable-store sales, excluding gasoline, rose 1% in the third quarter, contributing to an overall sales gain of 39.3% for the period, which includes the addition of 55 Penn Traffic locations.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Tops Markets here said comparable-store sales, excluding gasoline, rose 1% in the third quarter, contributing to an overall sales gain of 39.3% for the period, which includes the addition of 55 Penn Traffic locations.

The company posted a loss for the 12-week period, which ended Oct. 9, of $7.56 million, compared with a loss of $873,000 in the year-ago period.

Total sales in the quarter were $519.9 million. Operating income was down about 7%, to $6.45 million, vs. $6.96 million in the year-ago quarter.

Through the 40-week, year-to-date period, the company posted a loss of $11.5 million, on sales of $1.73 billion, vs. a loss of $1.4 million on sales of $1.27 billion in the year-ago span. Operating income for the 40-week period was $8.94 million, vs. $28.8 million in the year-ago period.
