LITTLE FALLS, N.J. — The union representing workers at A&P stores in Westchester County, N.Y., on Monday said the troubled company was making “outrageous” contract demands, including pay decreases and givebacks.

In a message posted on the website of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 464A here, John Niccolai, president of the local, said A&P was demanding pay cuts of up to $65 per week; higher worker costs for health care; a new new-hire program that would reduce pay scales and benefits; and the elimination of a part-time program. The union and A&P have further negotiations scheduled this week.

A&P officials last week acknowledged that they would look to reduce labor costs as part of an overall cost reduction program.

Another 7,000 workers represented by Local 464A have a contract with A&P expiring in early 2012. The union also represented workers at eight of A&P’s Food Basics stores, which last week voted to accept the employer’s final offer.
