Schnucks plans store on former Shop ‘n Save site

Schnucks Markets Inc. is taking over the space of a former Supervalu Inc. Shop ‘n Save store in suburban St. Louis.

Schnucks said late yesterday that it has reached agreement with the property owners to lease the Maplewood, Mo., building after Shop ‘n Save decided not to renew its lease. In April, Minneapolis-based Supervalu announced that it aims to sell off the Shop ‘n Save grocery chain.

Plans call for the 57,575-square-foot store to reopen as a Schnucks supermarket in late August. St. Louis-based Schnucks said it will hire about 100 employees to staff the new store, located at 7355 Manchester Rd.

“Maplewood is a community that we’ve considered a prime location for quite some time, and Schnucks is excited to be growing right here in our home market,” said Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck. “We’re looking forward to bringing Maplewood our best-in-fresh products, competitive prices and Schnucks’ friendly, top-notch service.”

The Maplewood location will open its doors ahead of another new Schnucks in Warrenton, Mo., that’s currently under construction and scheduled to open in late fall. Situated at Highway 47 and Veterans Parkway, the 37,000-square-foot store will be the chain’s first location in the community.

And this weekend, on July 8, Schnucks plans to close two older, underperforming stores at 2601 N. Mulford Rd. and 3150 N. Rockton Ave. in Rockford, Ill.

Overall, Schnucks operates 100 supermarkets in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa.
