DUSSELDORF, Germany — Metro Group here announced yesterday that it is set to considerably expand its use of RFID in concert with its suppliers in 2007. Metro has approved two RFID starter packs, from Intermec, Everett, Wash., which will be offered to its suppliers. The preconfigured application contained in the packs makes it possible to easily fit pallets and boxes with RFID tags, Metro said. Both RFID starter packs contain an Intermec RFID-enabled printer and Bluetooth bar-code scanner. In addition, the second expanded option also contains an Intermec RFID portal for full recording of incoming and outgoing goods. By September, the Metro Group plans to have rolled out around 130 Intermec RFID portals across Germany in the Metro Cash & Carry stores and the Varena Distribution Center in Hamm. “Intermec is an important partner in our RFID rollout and we will continue to draw on their expertise in the future,” said Gerd Wolfram, managing director of MGI METRO Group Information Technology, in a statement.
