Select stores will partner with a local company called Green RU to recycle organic waste, one of Hy-Vee’s Iowa City stores announced on its Facebook page.

Hy-Vee will pilot the composting program at these stores before deciding to expand to other locations, according to The Gazette (Cedar Rapids, Iowa). The program will include food that is past expiration and non-edible plants and flowers; it will not impact the retailer’s donations of fresh food to local shelters and food banks.
