When it comes to going green, Spartan Stores is looking at both the chicken and the egg.

The wholesaler, which also operates 100 retail stores in Michigan, has started packaging its Spartan brand eggs in molded fiber cartons. These containers, which are made from recycled paper and plant fibers, are 100% biodegradable and are widely recognized as a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional styrofoam packages. They also, according to the company, provide better cushioning for eggs and are able to absorb more moisture.

“We anticipate that we will keep approximately 675,000 pounds of pulp for the new packaging from the landfills and save consumers nearly $100,000 per year by offering this environmentally friendly packaging,” said Alan Hartline, executive vice president of merchandising for Spartan, in a statement.

Spartan has also introduced a line of 100% natural chicken. These new offerings are economically priced, the company says, and are produced without the use of hormones or artificial ingredients.
