Stop & Shop steps up on sustainability

The retailer has pledged to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% by 2015 and achieve "zero waste" by 2020

This year is a big one for Stop & Shop’s sustainability efforts.

The 395-store chain pledged in 2008 to reduce its carbon footprint by 20% by 2015. It recently installed a fuel cell at a New York store, with plans for installations at two more stores. And in April, Stop & Shop broke ground at a Massachusetts distribution center on an anaerobic digester that promises to significantly reduce food waste.
