BevMo! Testing Mobile Coupons, Clearing System

NEW YORK – BevMo! (formerly Beverages and More!), Concord, Calif., and Envizio, Fremont, Calif., demonstrated a mobile coupon redemption and electronic clearing system at the National Retail Federation’s Annual Conference here this week.

BevMo! will be testing the system at its Walnut Creek, Calif., store within the next month, said Bob Graham, vice president of IT for BevMo!, which operates 130 stores.

The technology allows a consumer to receive manufacturer offers on their smartphone, select their items in store and then scan a QR code at the checkout to redeem the coupons.

The NRF demonstration ran on an NCR point-of-sale terminal with NCR's Advanced Checkout Solution. It also exhibited a CPG manufacturer's and retailer's dashboard, which shows redemption details in near real time, preventing “runaway redemption” and out-of-stocks, said Envizio. The solution also allows the retailer to receive settlement via electronic clearing at the end of the business day.

“This addresses years and years of coupon clearinghouse issues,” Graham told SN at the conference. “The CPGs love it – they get their data faster. And it meets consumer needs and helps us move product.”

In addition to beverages (wine, beer, spirits, soft drinks, energy drinks), BevMo! carries such food items as candy, caviar, cookies, crackers, snacks and gourmet foods.
