Demonstrating Technology Excellence 2003: Food Lion, Supervalu and Knowlan's Festival Foods

In an effort to recognize companies in the food distribution industry that have demonstrated excellence and leadership in the use of technology, SN is pleased to launch its first annual Technology Excellence Awards.

The awards are being given in three categories: chain, wholesaler and independent. The program was launched last November with a call for nominations that could be entered on the SN website from anyone working in the food industry. After a careful evaluation of the nominations, as well as a review of coverage in the SN Technology & Logistics section over the past year, SN editors chose the following companies: Food Lion (chain); Supervalu (wholesaler); and Knowlan’s Festival Foods (independent).

The winners were announced yesterday at the Food Marketing Institute’s Marketechnics show, being held this week, Feb. 23 to 25, at the Dallas Convention Center. A dinner and ceremony for the winners followed the announcement. FMI granted winning companies up to 10 complimentary registrations for next year’s Marketechnics show in San Francisco.

Winning companies were found to have demonstrated excellence in using technology over the past year to enhance operations (reduce costs or boost revenues) in one or more of the following areas: stores, warehouses, headquarters and the Web (with trading partners, associates or consumers). The companies also took a leadership role in helping promote the use of technology in the industry as a whole.
