Demonstrating Technology Excellence 2004: Shaw's, Unified Western Grocers, Dorothy Lane Market, Peapod and Metro Group

SN is pleased to announce the winners of its second annual Technology Excellence Awards program, which was launched last year to recognize companies in the food distribution industry that have demonstrated excellence and leadership in the use of technology.

The 2004 awards are being given in five categories: chain, wholesaler, independent, online sales and international; the last two categories are new. The awards program was launched last November with a call for nominations that could be entered on the SN website.

After a thorough review of the nominations, coverage in SN, and input from industry experts, SN selected the following winners: Shaw's Supermarkets (chain), Unified Western Grocers (wholesaler), Dorothy Lane Market (independent), Peapod (online sales) and Metro Group (international).

The winners were announced Feb. 29 on the exhibit floor at Food Marketing Institute's Marketechnics show, held Feb. 29 to March 2 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. A dinner and ceremony for the winners were held last evening at the Farallon restaurant in San Francisco.

FMI and SN are providing each of the winning companies with up to four complimentary registrations for next year's Marketechnics show. This year's awards program is being sponsored by Lawson Software, St. Paul, Minn.

The winners were found to have demonstrated not only enterprise and innovation in the use of technology to improve their operations, but also leadership in helping to advance the use of technology in the food retailing industry as a whole.
