Retailers Improve Odds for 'Hunger' Sales

AUSTIN, Texas — An H-E-B Plus store here had a free showing of "The Hunger Games" this past Friday night in advance of the midnight release of the DVD.

The 9 p.m. event included free popcorn and a costume contest. The three participants with the best costumes received a $10 credit toward the purchase of the movie. The first 10 customers who purchased the movie received a full-size movie poster.

Meanwhile, other retailers are offering "Hunger Games" combo deals. Safeway, for instance, is marketing a $17.99 combo pack that includes a DVD of the hit movie, a three-count box of Pop Secret popcorn, one bag of Twizzlers (11-14 ounce) or Jolly Ranchers (13-14-ounce), and a 1-liter bottle of Pepsi. The same package featuring a Blu-Ray version of the movie is available for 19.99.
