Wal-Mart Seeks L.A. Chinatown Site: Report

LOS ANGELES — Wal-Mart Stores has applied for a building permit to open a Walmart Market in the densely populated Chinatown section in the city's downtown area, according to the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy.

The group said Wal-Mart has filed an application with the city's Department of Buildings and Safety to open a store on the ground floor of a senior citizen center across from a high school in an area served primarily by Asian-owned businesses.

"We're concerned our historic community is going to be negatively affected by the development of this Wal-Mart," said Sissy Trinh, executive director of the Southeast Asian Community Alliance. "The reality is that our local businesses that have serviced the Asian community for generations will likely get squeezed out of Chintatown."

Wal-Mart officials could not be reached for comment late Friday.
