Wal-Mart Taps Foran as China CEO

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores here said Tuesday it has named Greg Foran president and chief executive officer of the company's China operations.

Foran had joined Walmart International last October after a long career with Australian retailer Woolworths. In China he succeeds Ed Chan, who left last year after the company was reportedly accused of mislabeling product as organic at some stores.

The chief operating officer and chief financial officer of Wal-Mart's China division also left last year. Wal-Mart, which entered China in 1996, has more than 370 stores in the country, including supercenters, Sam's Clubs and Neighborhood Markets.

Foran held several executive posts at Woolworths, including general manager of Big W, the company's discount department store division, and Dick Smith, which specializes in consumer electronics. His experience includes operations, merchandising, marketing and replenishment.

"With his distinguished career in retail, Greg is uniquely qualified to lead our growing business in China," said Scott Price, president and CEO of Walmart Asia and interim CEO for Walmart China.

"I'm honored to have the privilege to lead our business in China and serve our customers there," Foran said. "China is a very important market for Walmart and I look forward to working with our 100,000 associates."
