CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Bashas' Markets here recently began offering melanomography screenings to help skin cancer prevention, said Alison Bendler, spokeswoman for the retailer.

Bashas' began offering the screenings through its ongoing HealthStyles program in 20 stores on a rotating basis in the Phoenix metro area last month, she said. The program will run through May 2004.

Phoenix-based Telemedco provides the digital imaging technology and technicians who take images of patients' skin. The images are then sent to the University of Arizona, Tucson, for review by dermatologists, she said.

These screenings are especially important in the Phoenix market, which Bashas' serves, Bendler said. Skin cancer is an important concern there because of the year-round strong sun exposure.

"This non-invasive procedure is an easy way to proactively fight skin cancer," she said. "Bashas' has the advantage of offering this new technology. The screenings will hopefully bring new customers to the Bashas' locations where the service is offered." Screenings cost customers $30 for the first image and $10 for each additional image, Bendler said.

Results are mailed to patients within 14 days. The results contain detailed information and referral telephone numbers for patients with suspicious skin markings, Bendler said.

These digital screenings have never been offered to the general public before, according to Telemedco.
