SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Eight supermarket companies have won expense-paid trips to the Annual Produce Conference in Santa Barbara, Calif., this June as first-place prizes in the 1993 California Summer Fruits Contest.
to best ripen tree fruit.
More than 25,000 stores developed summer fruit merchandising and promotion programs around several categories: preripening programs, internal sales contests, display contests, video promotions, drawings and custom-designed promotions. Working with regional Tree Fruit Agreement merchandisers, stores were required to describe their program in advance, then document their activities through photos and sales results.
The winners were: Capistar Produce, Holt, Mich.; Cub Foods, Stillwater, Minn.; Cub Foods Super Discount Markets, Lithia Springs, Ga.; Farm Fresh, Norfolk, Va.; Festival Foods, Omaha, Neb.; King Kullen Grocery Co., Westbury, N.Y.; Scolari's Warehouse Markets, Sparks, Nev., and Tom Thumb Food & Pharmacy, Dallas. The Annual Produce Conference is a joint effort between the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association, the Produce Marketing Association, the Food Marketing Institute and the National-American Wholesale Grocers' Association.
