SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Consumers Markets here recently put store-level bakery managers to work writing ads for its circulars. The result: some first-ever themes.

One ad, breaking this week, targets small game hunters. "We needed some new ideas," said Bea Harden, bakery-deli merchandiser for the 24-unit chain.

"At our managers' meeting in August, we broke them up into groups and each group composed two months' worth of ads," she said. The managers were urged to take advantage of suppliers' price deals when choosing what products to put on special and to think of a theme. Small game hunting is big this time of year in southwest Missouri and Arkansas, where most of Consumers' stores are located. And hunters take to the woods with food, usually sandwich fixings and sweets. "So one group of managers put together a combination of items they thought would particularly appeal to hunters," Harden said.

The ad will feature melt-away cinnamon rolls at six for $1.69. Their everyday price is six for $1.99. Hoagie rolls will be highlighted at six for $1.19. Their regular price is $1.69. And eight-inch cream pies -- chocolate, lemon and coconut -- in the ad will be $1.99. They're regularly $2.50 each. Also, prepackaged bear's claw Danishes will be offered at $1.79 for six. The regular price is $1.99.

The ad also will use an illustration and copy designed to catch the attention of the hunter or the person who's packing his lunch, Harden said.
