A story in the Nov. 21 issue of SN on government inspections of supermarkets for compliance with the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act for produce and seafood departments presented incorrect information on the status of the inspections. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the inspections were completed last month on schedule. Results of the store inspections are required to be presented to Congress by May 8, 1995. The inspections are part of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990, which calls for retailers to provide, on a voluntary basis, nutrition information for each of the 20 top-selling fruit, vegetable and seafood items in their stores. Should stores fail to be in "substantial compliance" with the law, nutrition information could become mandatory. "Substantial compliance" means that 60% of the retailers inspected must post 90% of the required information.
