Big V Supermarkets Taps Operations VP

ts here has named Charles "Chuck" Newsom vice president of store operations. Newsom succeeds John Beisel, who had been senior vice president of store operations at Big V before becoming a consultant to the chain.

In his new position Newsom will be responsible for the operations of Big V's 27 stores under the ShopRite banner. Operations managers and the director of operations planning report to Newsom. Newsom reports to Joe Fisher, senior vice president of marketing and operations. Previously, Newsom was a divisional vice president for A&P, Montvale, N.J.

Big V, a member of the Wakefern Food Corp. cooperative based in Elizabeth, N.J., operates 27 ShopRite stores in the Hudson Valley region, one PriceRite club store and one Big V Market.

Pathmark Appoints Senior VP

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. -- Pathmark Stores here, formerly Supermarkets General Corp., has named John K. Shipton senior vice president of public affairs and marketing.

Shipton was senior vice president of marketing.

In his new position, Shipton retains his responsibility for marketing and sales strategy development, category management, and electronic marketing programs. He also adds responsibility for public relations, press relations and legislative affairs.

In taking on these new responsibilities, Shipton succeeds Larry Salinas, formerly vice president of public affairs, who has left the company.

Shipton reports to Ron Rallo, senior vice president of merchandising.

Ragusa Takes VP Post at Zallie

CLEMENTON, N.J. -- Zallie Supermarkets, a ShopRite operator based here, has named Pat C. Ragusa to the new position of vice president of operations. The company said the move is related to its expansion plans for the next three years.

Ragusa was general manager of the Ultra Foods division of Laneco and senior vice president of Laneco. He reports to David Zallie, president.

From its present five ShopRite stores, Zallie said it expects to double in size within two to three years.

The enlargement of a Philadelphia store is scheduled to begin in February and a new unit in Medford, N.J., is expected to open in the summer of 1995. Negotiations for two additional sites for 1996 openings are under way. All stores will be in the 65,000-square-foot range.

Former FNS Head on DIY Board

CLEVELAND -- John A. Shields, former president and chief executive officer of First National Supermarkets, has been named a director of DIY Home Warehouse here.

Shields was one of three new board members appointed by the do-it-yourself, home-improvement retailer last month.

In June Shields chose early retirement after 10 years with First National, a division of Ahold, Zaandam, the Netherlands.

Shields became president and CEO of First National-East, Windsor Locks, Conn., last year, after the operation was divided into separate Connecticut and Ohio divisions. He had been president and CEO of the combined operation.

Florida Grocers CEO Resigns

CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- John B. Pearman president and chief executive officer of the Retail Grocers Association of Florida since 1987, has announced his resignation, effective at the end of 1994.

"By announcing my resignation this far in advance, the association will be able to do a thorough search for a replacement, and the transition will be smooth and orderly," Pearman said. He plans to pursue personal interests. An association spokesman said a search is under way to find a successor.

Additionally, the association has elected William Hardee chairman for 1994. Hardee, a co-owner of Rines' Market, Indiantown, Fla., succeeds George Davis, owner of EZ Foods, Dundee, Fla.
