Food Lion Names Finance Head

Lion here said Laura Kendall has been named chief financial officer for the 1,113-unit chain.

She succeeds Dan Boone, who left the company last August.

Kendall, 45, was chief financial officer for F&M Distributors, Warren, Mich., a chain of discount drug stores, and before that was vice president of finance at Perry Drug Stores, Detroit, Mich.

At Food Lion, Kendall reports to Bill McCanless, chief administrative officer.

Smith's Bolinder Has Retired

SALT LAKE CITY -- Robert D. Bolinder has retired from Smith's Food & Drug Centers here following a 32-year career in the food industry.

Bolinder, 65, was executive vice president of corporate planning and development at Smith's. He joined the company in 1988 as executive vice president and chief financial officer and remained in that post until 1993, when he took over responsibilities for corporate planning and development.

Bolinder, originally an accountant with Deloitte Touche in San Francisco, joined Albertson's, Boise, Idaho, in 1965 as controller and, during a 19-year career there, was treasurer, chief financial and administrative officer, president and ultimately chairman of the board.

After leaving Albertson's and prior to joining Smith's, Bolinder formed a consulting firm called Robert D. Bolinder Associates in Boise, which he still oversees.

Bolinder remains a board member at Smith's. He is also a director of Hannaford Bros. Co., Scarborough, Maine, and H.E. Butt Grocery Co., San Antonio, and a former vice president of Food Marketing Institute and former president of the Western Association of Food Chains.

Homeland Taps Two to Posts

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Homeland Stores here has named Terry Marczewski vice president and corporate controller, a new position.

Marczewski joined Homeland as corporate controller and chief accounting officer after serving as vice president and controller of Scrivner, a locally-based wholesaler that was acquired in 1995 by Fleming Cos. here.

In another change, Francis Wong, formerly director of financial planning and assistant treasurer, has been promoted to treasurer, also a new position.

Both Marczewski and Wong report to Larry Kordisch, executive vice president of finance and chief financial officer.

FMI Adds New Board Members

WASHINGTON -- Food Marketing Institute here said it has added two new members to its board of directors: Leonard L. Harris Jr., president and owner of Chatham Food Centers, a single-store operator in Chicago, who was appointed to the board; and Jonathan F. Johnson, president and chief executive officer, Community Pride Food Stores, an eight-store inner-city chain in Richmond, Va., who was elected to fill a board vacancy.

Wakefern Appoints Attorney

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- Wakefern Food Corp. here said Ann Marie Burke has joined Risk Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wakefern, as a staff attorney.

She reports to Natan Tabak, senior vice president of administrative services.

Burke was in private practice. She has also been senior group counsel for Foster Wheeler Corp. and a trial attorney for the federal government representing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
