PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle and Magee-Womens Hospital, both based here, have teamed up to offer shoppers a health-education newsletter that also appears on the chain's Web site.

The Internet version (www.gianteagle.com) went on-line earlier this month. The first issue of the free quarterly newsletter called Connecting With You was made available to shoppers in January. An April/Spring issue is now being given away at Giant Eagle pharmacy departments, according to a number of Pittsburgh-area stores surveyed by SN. Both editions can be viewed on the Giant Eagle Web site.

Executives contacted at Giant Eagle, which operates 126 pharmacies in 201 stores, all declined comment on the partnership with Magee-Womens Hospital and the availability of its health-information publication and services.

"It's written and produced in our office," said Deborah Campbell, the hospital's media and advertising coordinator. "Magee and Giant Eagle have partnered together to do health education."

To preview the full-color newsletter, a consumer can go to the company's general corporate Web site, and click on the picture link to the publication. Connecting With You targets women shoppers. The spring edition contains information on allergies, vitamins and osteoporosis, accompanied by an "Osteo Quiz" that assesses women's risk factors.

The issue focuses heavily on nutrition, especially calcium intake. There is a calcium-rich recipe for vegetarian lasagna and a guide showing recommended amounts of calcium for females ranging in age from one year to over 51. There are also beauty tips, gift ideas such as Giant Eagle gift certificates and party platters, and event listings for the retailer and the hospital.

This collaboration is not the first health care partnership between the two establishments. "We've done some [in-store] screenings," Campbell said. "We had healthy-heart, blood-pressure and cholesterol screenings at Giant Eagle stores." The hospital and Giant Eagle will host osteoporosis screenings June 5, 19 and 26, said Campbell.
