ST. LOUIS -- Funeral services have been held here for Joseph Bettendorf, founder of the former Bettendorf-Rapp chain, which had been based here.
h the opening of a supermarket-style unit in 1929. This led to an eventual chain of 10 stores, which were acquired by ACF Wrigley Co. of Detroit in 1958. The stores became part of Schnuck Markets here in the early 1970s.
From 1968 until 1981, Bettendorf operated a small group of independent stores here under the Jay-Bee Liberty Markets banner. They, too, ended up as part of Schnuck Markets.
