ST. LOUIS -- Funeral services have been held here for Joseph Bettendorf, founder of the former Bettendorf-Rapp chain, which had been based here.h the opening of a supermarket-style unit in 1929. This led to an eventual chain of 10 stores, which were acquired by ACF Wrigley Co. of Detroit in 1958. From 1968 until 1981, Bettendorf operated a small group of independent stores here under the Jay-Bee Liberty Markets banner. They, too, ended up as part of Schnuck Markets.

Survivors include Irmengard, his wife; two sons and two daughters.
