Fresh America is an integrated food distribution management company. Dole Fresh Vegetables is a division of Dole Food Co.

IFPA's 1996 Guide Available

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The International Fresh-cut Produce Association is making its 1996 "Membership Directory and Buyer's Guide" available.

This year's guide has been expanded to include a product and service index for the fresh-cut industry. The index features 46 categories with 21 fresh-cut produce items and 25 allied industry products.

The guide is free to IFPA members and can be purchased by nonmembers.

Kent's Using UPC, Care Tags

VISTA, Calif. -- Kent's Bromeliad Nursery has introduced tags with UPC bar codes and care and handling tips.

The full-color plastic tags attach to Kent's 4- or 6-inch bromeliad plants by elastic strings. According to the company, the tags cannot be removed unless they are cut off. Besides UPC codes, the tags also contain information about product size.

Consumer information includes tips on watering, proper light and temperature, fertilizer and transplanting.

NAPPM, UFFVA Pick Florida

ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The National Association of Produce Market Managers will hold its annual convention concurrent with United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association's annual convention in Orlando, Fla., next year.

For the second year, the International Apple Institute is also holding its annual meeting during United 97, UFFVA's 93rd annual Convention and Industry Showcase.

United's show will take place Feb. 22 to 24. NAPPM's convention will run Feb. 22 to Feb. 26, and IAI will hold its meeting Feb. 25.

"This is a trend that we at United certainly encourage," said Edward Duda, chairman of United and chief executive officer of A. Duda and Sons. "Members of each association will benefit by broader educational opportunities."

PBH Makes Television Debut

NEWARK, Del. -- The Produce for Better Health Foundation has teamed with "The Produce Tip of The Day" television program to spread the message of 5 a Day and raise funds.

Foundation members will have the opportunity to license the "Tip of the Day," a daily segment about fresh fruits and vegetables.

Under the agreement, participants would own the rights to the segment in their marketing areas. Then they could place the program, along with their advertising, on any television station they choose.

PBH would get a percentage of revenue on every licensing agreement it generates in the industry.

"This agreement is a great marriage," said Mike Gretz, president of PBH. " 'The Produce Tip of the Day' has been spreading the word about healthy eating and the value of consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Now, PBH will benefit from an increase in consumer awareness of the 5 a Day message, as well as increased funding.
