SHAW'S REDUCES WAIT FOR OXYCONTIN

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Shaw's here has modified its policy concerning the sale of the controversial painkiller OxyContin, a move that alleviated concerns of the Massachusetts Board of Certification in Pharmacy. The company's Shaw's and Star Market stores have taken down signs indicating that customers would have to wait up to three days for their prescriptions, spokesman Bernard Rogan told SN.

The company now will make the drug available to customers within 24 hours, he said. The state board had been concerned that the medication would not be available for patients with new prescriptions, according to Christine Zybert, a spokeswoman for the board. The powerful drug has been the target of numerous robberies in pharmacies, which prompted Shaw's to stop keeping an inventory of it on its shelves.
