More Than Half NYC Supermarkets Fail Annual Inspection: Report

NEW YORK -- More than half the supermarkets here failed New York State inspections in 2000 and 2001, according to a series of articles in the New York Daily News last week. The articles, based on documents the paper obtained through the state Freedom of Information Act, said that 331 of 610 supermarkets inspected in the city in 2000 and 2001 were found to have the most serious level of violations, "critical deficiencies," which the paper said were defined by law as conditions or practices that can lead to food contamination or trigger illness.
