British trade journal The Grocer last week said that London-based Tesco would pay around $4.3 billion for a 49% stake in Meijer, according to PlanetRetail.net. But Judith Clark, a Meijer spokeswoman, told SN those reports were "completely not true" and "absolute speculation." In a memo to employees, Meijer's founding family members Fred, Hank and Doug Meijer said, "It is important for our entire team to know these rumors are false and that we are not negotiating for the sale of any part of our company." Tesco declined to comment.

TOPS SELLS THREE STORES IN N.Y. TO HANNAFORD BROS.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tops Markets here said it has sold three stores to Hannaford Bros., Scarborough, Maine. Hannaford will assume operation of the units, located in New Hartford, Utica and Clinton, N.Y., in early 2006, Tops said. The stores were among 31 eastern New York stores slated for sale or closure earlier this year by Tops, a division of Ahold. Tops previously announced the sale of 12 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers and six to Price Chopper.
