Wal-Mart Corp., Safeway and other plaintiffs were granted class-action status last week in their lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard, which charges the bank card companies illegally require merchants that accept their credit cards to accept their debit cards as well. A trial is scheduled to begin in late November. Both Visa and Mastercard told the Associated Press they plan to appeal the ruling by a U.S. District Court judge in Brooklyn, N.Y. Other plaintiffs in the case include Circuit City Stores, the Food Marketing Institute, the National Retail Federation and the International Mass Retail Association.
