BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Tops Markets here is using a new tactic to get the young mother into its stores: a "Baby Care Sale."

For the week of July 23, the company featured baby essentials in its circular. Under the baby care sale heading, one page was devoted to items such as food, diapers, formula and accessories.

A variety, 24-jar case of Beech-Nut baby food was on sale for $6.88, as well as the company's juice, Stage 3 and cereal products. Huggies Supreme diapers sold for $6.77. Bonamil powder formula was featured at $4.98, and shoppers could purchase two 84-count containers of private-label baby wipes for $3.

Johnson's baby health and beauty care products, and Healthflow bottles/nipples, Playtex bottles and spill-proof cups, and Ivory Snow detergent rounded out the sale.

While Tops declined to comment on its efforts, an area observer told SN this type of baby category sale is something new for the chain, which recognizes the young mother as a very important customer. This ad is part of a series the company plans on conducting, he said.

However, he added, Tops won't be showing any favorites. "It was Beech-Nut this time, it may be Gerber the next. Likewise, Pampers may get the nod in lieu of Huggies when Tops decides to run a similar sale."
