As a former Fleming associate who is now marketing technology systems to independents, I've always wondered why this type of training program [intended to help the incoming generation of independent retailers run the business] wasn't available. Many of my customers are second- and third-generation grocery retailers. Unfortunately, earlier generations couldn't provide this type of well-rounded education themselves. As mentioned, there are many educational programs offered by various wholesalers and trade associations, but most are short-term, mission-specific classes rather than a long-term, well-rounded education that's backed by experience.
