SAN FRANCISCO -- Union members at more than 300 northern California supermarkets operated by Safeway, Pleasanton, Calif., and Albertson's, Boise, Idaho, remained on the job but without a contract last week. After a two-week voting process, 61% of the members of eight United Food and Commercial Workers Union locals voted to reject management's "last and final" offer. While this was enough to defeat management's proposed contract, it fell shy of the two-thirds vote required to strike, according to union spokesman Ron Lind. Meetings were scheduled between the union and the retailers last week, but no outcome has been announced.
