BARTOW, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores has sold its egg-packing plant here to Lake City, Fla.-based Hillandale Farms, which will operate the egg plant and supply the retailer with product. Hillandale was scheduled to take over management of the plant Aug. 6, and, according to published reports, will decide by June 30, 2002, on continuing operations at the Bartow facility. The plant processes more than a million eggs every day for its Florida supermarkets. "We feel we can procure eggs at a better price outside, rather than doing it ourselves," said Mickey Clerc, spokesman for the Jacksonville, Fla.-based retailer. He declined to disclose the sales price.
