Ukrop’s Offers Alternative to Plastic Bags

Ukrop’s is the latest retailer to show its earth-friendly side. The retailer has launched recyclable bags made of non-woven polypropylene mesh.

RICHMOND, Va. — Ukrop’s here is the latest retailer to show its earth-friendly side. The retailer has launched recyclable bags made of non-woven polypropylene mesh. Each costs 99 cents, but users get a 5-cent credit each time they use them. “Recycle, reduce and reuse with Ukrop’s,” the retailer writes on promotional materials. Ukrop’s efforts come at a time when opposition to plastic bags is growing. San Francisco has banned plastic shopping bags. Retailers are also taking steps on their own. PCC Natural Markets, Seattle, said it will stop using them come Oct. 1, encouraging shoppers to use paper or reusable bags. And Whole Foods has had tremendous success with limited-edition canvas bags printed with the slogan: "I'm not a plastic bag." The bags are designed by fashion designer Anya Hindmark.
