WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Raley's has partnered with a frozen entree supplier to provide value-added services for its diabetes program.

Organic Bistro Whole Life Meals is supplying literature, handouts and coupons at the grocer's eight-month-old diabetes classes. The free classes cover eating, shopping and cooking for persons with diabetes.

“Through our partnership with Organic Bistro, we can offer our customers additional resources and coupons for healthy meal solutions,” Raley's spokeswoman Amy Johnston told SN. “We hope this encourages customers fighting diabetes to take proactive steps toward healthier lifestyles.”

Raley's Corporate Dietitian Earline Griffith started the classes last July. Meetings are held monthly.

Available at Raley's since January, Organic Bistro Whole Life Meals were developed by Laryn Callaway, a dietitian, chef and naturopathic physician. The meals contain whole grains, lean proteins and at least 3 ounces of vegetables and are low in sodium. All were developed on the principles of low glycemic index and load — measures for how quickly foods turn into sugar.

“One of our key initiatives is to do community outreach initiatives like these,” Callaway told SN.

Raley's carries about four Organic Bistro meals per store. Coupons distributed in the diabetes classes are for $1 to $2 off per entree.
