Ahold Delhaize USA

Ahold Delhaize USA is one of the largest supermarket operators in the United States. A subsidiary of Zaandam, Netherlands-based global food retailer Ahold Delhaize, the company operates more than 2,000 grocery stores along the U.S. East Coast under the retail banners Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Giant/Martin’s, Food Lion and Hannaford. Its business units also include online grocer FreshDirect, e-commerce and digital technology provider Peapod Digital Labs and retail services arm Retail Business Services (RBS).

Ahold Delhaize USA was formed in July 2016 with the completed merger of Zaandam-based Royal Ahold and Brussels, Belgium-based Delhaize Group. The $29 billion deal brought together Ahold USA's Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Giant Food Stores and Martin's Food Market stores with Delhaize America’s Food Lion and Hannaford stores. Ahold USA also included the pioneering online grocery unit Peapod, but that business was closed by Ahold Delhaize USA in February 2020. In January 2021, Ahold Delhaize USA finalized its acquisition of New York-based FreshDirect, again returning to the pure-play online grocery retail arena.
